About Martha Ballard...
Martha Ballard lived more than 200 years ago in the area that is now Hallowell and Augusta. A mid-wife, she traveled ceaselessly throughout the region, attending births and tending to the ill, while also caring for her husband, Ephraim and their seven children.
Martha religiously kept a journal which later inspired Laurel Ulrich to publish “A Mid-wife’s Tale”, a fascinating study of a strong, independent woman who dedicated her life to caring for others. It is in honor of Martha Ballard that the assisted living component of Granite Hill Estates is named for her.
